POSITIVE BEHAVIOUR FOR LEARNING
TERM 3, WEEK 2-4
Be an excellent learner- ‘I learn from my mistakes’.
Over the next 2 weeks, students will be developing the skills to become excellent learners by learning from their mistakes. It is so tough trying to convince students that mistakes are part of the process of learning. The fear of making mistakes and the fear of failure is very real. The first step that we can take to create an environment that supports failure and mistakes as part of the process is to admit to the students that we will make mistakes. After that, it is supporting students when they make their mistakes and guiding them through the process of reflecting on those mistakes and how they can learn from them.
Our SJKB Clarity Journey
This term, we continue with our Leading, Learning, Collaborative journey with all staff participating in Professional dialogue to improve our teaching practice. This model is based on the principles of Clarity, developed from Lyn Sharratt’s research studies on student achievement, into what works best in schools to improve student learning outcomes.
This term, we will be developing a focus on the following Parameter:
12- Parental and Community Engagement.
Mr Fuller and I will present to other schools in week 6 from our diocese about how SJKB implements this parameter.
Parental involvement in each child’s education is encouraged with opportunities existing at various levels to enable parents to be engaged to a level that suits them best. This involvement ranges from attendance at events and functions to volunteering to assist in classrooms, through to involvement at a decision-making level through the P&F Association. We also continue to establish our community partnership with Toronto Men’s Shed and Toronto Nursing Home.

World Day of Grandparents and the Elderly -
23rd July (every fourth Sunday in July)
Pope Francis declared this year's theme for World Day of Grandparents and the Elderly (23rd July) is “His mercy is from age to age” (Lk 1:50), which he recalled, takes us back to the joyful meeting between the young Mary and her elderly relative Elizabeth (Lk 1:39-56).
“My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord;
my spirit rejoices in God my saviour.
For he has looked upon his handmaid’s lowliness; behold, from now on will all ages call me blessed.
The Mighty One has done great things for me,
and holy is his name.
His mercy is from age to age
to those who fear him.
He has shown might with his arm,
dispersed the arrogant of mind and heart.
He has thrown down the rulers from their thrones
but lifted up the lowly.
The hungry he has filled with good things;
the rich he has sent away empty.
He has helped Israel his servant,
remembering his mercy,
according to his promise to our fathers,
to Abraham and to his descendants forever.”
– Magnificat of Mary (Luke 1:46-55)
The theme was also chosen to be in tune with World Youth Day in Lisbon: Mary arose and went with haste, also taken from Luke's Gospel. Pope Francis says dialogue between the elderly and the young helps to obtain a more complete vision of the way in which a more humane and fraternal society can be built.
World Day of Grandparents and Elderly Day has also been set close to the Feast of St Joachim and Anne. St Joachim and Anne are believed to be the parents of the Virgin Mary and Jesus’ grandparents. We celebrate their joint feast day on 26th July. Their love for one another and for Mary is an example to us of how God calls us to live. They also remind us to honour our own grandparents and to thank them for the blessings they have passed down to us in love.
Pope Benedict XVI’s Prayer for Grandparents
It was lovely to celebrate our Grandparents Day on Tuesday and connect this to our 100th day of school for the year. Our liturgy was led by Kinder and 3/4 Maroon, and it was a beautiful celebration of student’s special connection to their Grandparents and special friends. Grandparents were then invited to stay and share lunchtime with students for a picnic lunch with tea/coffee and scones provided. With the sun shining and so many happy faces, it was lovely to see our playground filled with grandparents and families! Thank you to all those who were able to come and share this day with us.

Visit from Father Priyantha
On Friday of Week 1, Father Priyantha visited our infants classes, after he celebrated 9:00am mass in the morning at our St Joseph Church. He visited Kinder, Year 1B/M and Year 2 B/M; where he introduced himself and spoke to the children about Jesus, his home country of Sri Lanka and how long he has been a Priest at St Joseph Church. It was lovely for the students to make this connection with a priest coming into their classroom, not just sitting at church and listening but really connecting, with the freedom to ask questions. Father Priyantha will be back to introduce himself to the primary classes at the start of August.
Term 3 dates for the calendar:
• Tuesday 8th August: Feast of Mary of the Cross Mackillop Mass in the Church at 9am
Blessings,

In week 6 of this term we will be celebrating
Bookweek
This year’s theme is Read, Grow, Inspire!
During Bookweek we will hold a Book Fair in the Library, host a visiting author/illustrator and enjoy our fabulous Bookweek dress-up parade as well as our usual competitions and fun.
In addition we will be enjoying the Children’s Book Council of Australia’s (CBCA) shortlisted books, a collection of books chosen each year from Australia’s best children’s authors.
St Joseph’s has a wonderful collection of books that we encourage all students to borrow.
The Library is open during lunch times on Wednesday – Friday and the children love coming in to enjoy books, chess, games and writing or drawing. It is a great social activity for them and it’s lovely to watch them interact with each other and enjoy creating. Students are also able to borrow during lunchtimes on these days.

All students need a library bag to borrow from our Library. This helps protect our lovely books.
School Library bags are available for $14 for anyone who needs one.Library borrowing occurs weekly for students.
Students are able to keep the books for two weeks, although most return them for new ones each week. If students would like to keep books for longer than 2 weeks, we ask that they bring them to the Library to "renew" the borrowing record in our system.
Infants (K-2) borrowing day is Monday.
Primary (3-6) borrowing is Tuesdays.
Many parents and carers often wonder if a book is appropriate for their child. A great resource to help with this is Common Sense Media . This website
allows parents/carers to search books, games, apps, movies and websites to view whether it is age appropriate and what its content contains.I am very blessed to have some wonderful helpers in the library. Our Library monitors volunteer at lunchtimes to help organise resources, put books away and keep the Library neat and tidy. THANK YOU to those students.

PRC
The Premier’s Reading Challenge is an initiative by the NSW Government that encourages a love of reading in students from Kinder to Year 9. It is not a competition but a challenge to each student to read widely and enjoy reading. Students are each given an individual username and password to log onto the PRC website. There they can add the PRC books they have read to their reading record. Students who complete the challenge will have their names displayed in the library and the newsletter. At the end of the year they will receive a certificate to show their achievement. At St Joey’s we also like to celebrate with a Pizza Party for those students that complete the challenge in term four.
The challenge is coming to an end on 18th August. All reading records must be completed by students by the end of this day.
Part of our St Joseph’s Library collection includes Premier’s Reading Challenge books for all ages. Any students who wish to complete the challenge are able to get all of their books from our library. I’m so proud of the students who have taken part in this years challenge.
The PRC Website can be found here:

Sora
St Joseph’s has a subscription to SORA. Sora is an eBook and audio book Library. As part of the Australian Catholic Education Network (ACEN) member collection, your child can access eBooks and audio books through the Maitland Newcastle Diocese.
All you need to do is to download the SORA app or go to the website and sign in through the
ACEN membership, then you and your child can enjoy some terrific books on your devices at home.
One of the great features of SORA is the inclusion of a Premier Reading Challenge book section. Graphic novels, Fiction and Non-Fiction books are also available.
Log in and explore today.
If you have any questions about anything in the Library, feel free to send me an email.
Happy reading,

Teacher Librarian and ER Teacher
This term students are participating in dance with Mrs Pockran as the main component of their PE program. It is fantastic to see the students choreographing their own dances and giving 'The Stomp' a wholehearted go!
In addition, each class is completing 'Jump Rope For Heart' each week for 15 'very tiring' minutes. We have access to amazing resources for teaching skipping and developing skills and tricks, as well as some new skipping ropes. On Wednesday 20th September at 1.45 we will conduct a 'skip off' where students will showcase their newly learned skills. There will be a gold coin collection for the Heart Foundation on this day which is a requirement of the Jump Rope for Heart Program.

Term 3 is the last term for the collection of points for Childrens' University. Students can have their passports stamped at lunch time each Wednesday. The time allocated reflects the learning component of the activity they participated in. For example, our visit to the university was 4 hours in total but only 2 hours was stamped as 'learning'. I have a workbook , movie review, book review and game review form available for any students looking to increase their points before the cut off. The workbook is worth 5 hours. Happy learning!

We have a number of students who have life threatening anaphylactic allergic reactions to all nuts and eggs. We would like to encourage families NOT to send these food items to school with their children or to ask their children to tell their teacher if they have brought them, so that they can be eaten away from affected children. We also encourage children NOT to share food at school.
